Making dirt and stain removal measurable
Our dirt and stain cloths are specially designed to objectively measure the performance of industrial laundry processes in terms of dirt and stain removal. The cloths contain different types of dirt and stains, ranging from lightly to heavily soiled, giving a clear picture of how effectively the washing process is working.
Why measuring is important
- Insight into performance: Make dirt and stain removal measurable and monitor the continuity of your laundry process. This way, deviations can be detected in a timely manner.
- Ensuring hygiene: Insufficiently clean washing can encapsulate bacteria, making them difficult to remove.
- Setting quality goals: Objective reporting helps to agree on clear quality goals with clients.
- Preventing Graying: Poor dirt removal can lead to graying of textiles and a less fresh appearance.
Application of the stain cloths
The use of these cloths is simple. A set of three cloths is co-cleaned once in the washing process to be tested. After drying, the results are measured and compared with the corresponding reference values and/or the agreed quality targets.
Practical applications
- Monitoring continuity: By using dirt and stain cloths cloths periodically (e.g., monthly), you can easily see if your laundry process is performing stable and meeting the required quality goals.
- Process Validation: Quickly and objectively compare the performance of current and new washing processes.
- Optimization: Identify shortcomings in the washing process and implement targeted improvements.
After washing and drying, stain removal is measured using a specially designed colorimeter based on the tristimulus measurement principle. We perform these measurements after the washed cloths have been dried and ironed (or mangled) and send back with the form that goes with it.
The TRA2023
The TRA (Tristimulus Reflection Analyzer) measures whiteness, stain removal and textile reflection. Our newest version, the TRA2023, is compact and operates without an external power supply, making it ideal for on-site use. Learn more here.
The packaging
Each set of dirt and stain cloths consists of three cotton cloths with the different dirt types sewn to them. The cloths are delivered in sealed packaging to ensure responsible storage, the stability of the applied dirt types and to prevent the influence of UV light.

From here on, the various species follow. These should come as a subsection under this topic.
ICM – Industrial Cleaning Monitor
The Industrial Cleaning Monitor (ICM) is a reliable tool for measuring the performance of laundry processes in terms of dirt and stain removal. Each set contains three cotton cloths to which four common dirt and stain types are sewn:
- Oil/pigment: Commonly found in various types of laundry such as ointments, kerosene, skin fats and dust particles.
- Food: Complex stains composed of fats, proteins, carbs and dyes.
- Bleachable: Stains such as wine, fruit, tea and fecal matter that can be bleached away during the process.
- Protein/Blood: Tests the removal of protein-containing stains, such as blood or food residues.
This set is washed once along with the washing process and provides insight into dirt and stain removal after drying.
WCM – Workwear Cleaning Monitor
The Workwear Cleaning Monitor (WCM) is designed to measure dirt and stain removal from industrial textiles, such as workwear from garages, the process industry or metalworking. The WCM consists of three cotton carriers to which dirt and stain types are sewn:
- Pigments: For example, soot, pigment or iron particles.
- Motor oil: Similar to oil from engines and machinery.
- Oil/pigments: Mineral oil with pigments, suitable for low wash temperatures.
- Sebum: Indicative of skin grease, such as the greasy stains on collars and cuffs.
The set is co-washed once and provides an objective picture of dirt and stain removal after drying.
MSM – Multi Soil Monitor
The Multi Soil Monitor (MSM) is designed for dry cleaning, wool washing and fine washing processes. With 16 different soil types on a 100% polyester backing, the MSM provides a comprehensive overview of the cleaning effects of a laundry process. The soil types simulate common soils on garments, such as slacks and outerwear.
After the washing process, the removal of the various dirt types is measured and compared to the baseline values. This gives an accurate picture of the performance of the process.
Application and benefits
- The monitors are easily co-cleaned in the process to be tested.
- After drying, the results are compared with predetermined reference values.
- They help validate, optimize and monitor the continuity of washing processes.
