Microbiological Control with RODAC Scales
RODAC plates are a simple and effective tool to perform microbiological analysis on hard surfaces such as conveyor belts, work tables, roll containers, and textiles. This method is often used for hygiene checks in laundromat, hospitals, clean rooms, and the food industry.
How do RODAC plates work?
A RODAC plate contains a breeding ground for microorganisms, hygienically covered with a protective lid. By removing the lid and pressing the culture medium onto a surface, microorganisms present are transferred to the breeding ground. After incubation, the grown microorganisms can be counted and analyzed, providing insight into the degree of contamination or the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection.
Applications
RODAC plates are suitable for a variety of applications:
- Textile (finished product control): Type T, E and S are often used together. For molds and yeasts, Type Y is used.
- Transport equipment and work surfaces: Type T is ideal for work tables, machines and conveyors.
- Drying and finishing equipment in laundromat: For example, at filler openings of dryers and entry systems of mangle equipment.
For smaller or hard-to-reach surfaces, sterile SWABS in combination with a Petri dish are a suitable alternative.
Types of RODAC Plates
RODAC plates are available in many different types. As standard, we stock the following breeding grounds:
- T (Total Germ Count): Measures overall hygiene. To determine total plate count, RODAC type TSA (Trypton Soy Agar) or RODAC type PCA (Plate Count Agar) is commonly used. To get an objective picture of hygiene without the presence of any growth inhibitors, RODAC type TSA (Trypton Soy Agar) + Tween 80 + Lecithin is often used. The additives Tween and Lecithin inactivate growth inhibitors.
- E (detects Enterobacteriaceae): RODAC type VRBGA (Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar). This type is used for detecting the absence of the Enterobacteriaceae. This group of bacteria includes Salmonella and Klebsiella, among others.
- S (detects Staphylococcus aureus): RODAC Type BPA (Baird Parker Agar). Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that is one of the main causes of skin or wound infections, as well as infections of internal organs. This bacterium is also not desirable in the food industry because it forms toxins that can lead to food poisoning.
- Y (Fungi and yeasts): To determine the absence of fungi and yeasts, the RODAC type YGC (Yeast Extract Glucose Chloramphenical Agar) is also increasingly used.
RODAC plates are always supplied by us in rolls of 10 pieces or as a set (10 pieces per type: T, E and S). Other types are available to order, often with a minimum order quantity and/or some delivery time.
Practical tools and additional services
- RODAC holder: A practical solution for stacking and moving trays.
- Incubator: Calibrated, digital incubators for incubating plates.
- Subscription service: receive RODAC plates automatically on an agreed schedule.
Training and external hygiene control
- Training: During our “Microbiology in Practice” training, participants learn, among other things, all about using RODAC plates and interpreting results.
- External audit: Our specialists can assess the hygienic condition of products and areas for you.
